Learning Technologies PhD graduate Dr. James Hatten began teaching as a full-time instructor in the Instructional Technology program at the University of South Florida in August 2015. Dr. Hatten teaches in the College of Education’s Department of Educational and Psychological Studies, where he oversees the program’s undergraduate courses, most notably “Introduction to Technology for Educators.” He also teaches graduate-level courses in web design and is the coordinator for USF’s five graduate certificate programs.

Hatten is a learning technology scholar with specialties in PK-12 technology integration, online teaching and learning, and instructional web design. In his research, he has explored innovative online qualitative data-gathering environments, the efficacy of online qualitative data collection, and designer-client interaction. Additionally, his work explores practices in PK-12 professional development and online professional development communities.

Dr. Hatten presented his dissertation, “Optimal Size for Online Asynchronous Text-Based Focus Group Discussions,” at the LT Media Lab in November 2014. His wife, Rachel Tholen Hatten, is a University of Minnesota Curriculum and Instruction (Literacy) PhD student who works as an English/Language Arts coordinator for Pasco County (FL) Schools.
