Matti Koivula and Jolie Kennedy presented their research at the 2018 AACE E-Learn conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dr. Koivula presented his research titled The Impact of Asynchronous Video Reflection on Social Presence: A Case Study. This research utilized a case study approach to investigate social presence through a community-based tool for asynchronous video reflection. His work contributed to the understanding of social presence by investigating the construct through a qualitative lens since social presence has primarily been studied quantitatively to date. The definition of social presence has evolved over many years and Dr. Koivula has refined the definition of social presence based on his study.
Dr. Kennedy presented her research titled Exploring Lived Experiences in Distance Learning: A Phenomenological Lens. This research utilized a phenomenological approach to study the lived experiences of distance learning. She presented a brief paper of her research work in progress. Her presentation illustrated that phenomenology is plural with varieties of phenomenology including descriptive, hermeneutic, and post-intentional phenomenology.
