Why Earthducation?

The Earthducation project evolved from nearly 10 years of delivering Adventure Learning projects to tens of millions of students and teachers around the globe. As we embarked upon our programs and collaborated with diverse cultures in locations ranging from the Arctic to the South Africa, it became evident that there were exhilarating narratives and experiences, large and small, that needed a worldwide outlet and global community.

The goal of Earthducation is to address the challenge set forth by the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014, DESD) – to integrate the principles, values, and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning. Understanding these connections between education and the natural environment on local scales will enable and empower change in education on a global scale, as it provides structure for modeling new approaches to education for sustainable development.

Earthducation focuses on two fundamental questions:

  • What is education to you?
  • How can education advance sustainability?

As we travel to climate hotspots on all 7 continents, we will collaborate with cultures from around the world to create an ecological narrative of our collective educational beliefs. Teachers, students, and the online community will expand upon and discuss these questions to explore how education influences the future of our planet.

Additional Expedition Questions

  • Will knowledge of different regional approaches to education aid us in developing a global approach to education that facilitates the emergence of a universal ideology of nature or a common cultural model about the environment?
  • How does education culturally inherent to a region's natural environment serve the process of learning for sustainable development?
  • Are emerging approaches to education such as adventure learning a viable tool in the design of such learning experiences and what are the affordances on a local and global scale?
