There have been many lessons learned during the Earthducation team’s first expedition in Burkina Faso including: the value of education, the wisdom of elders, the powerful examples of individuals like Romaric and his friends on how to “do” sustainability locally, the beauty of giving, the dangers of cows crossing the road, and the appreciation of maintained roads which reduce the number of flat tires in a trip. Join us in our Field Update to experience education and sustainability through the eyes of a nation that lives it every day!

First and foremost, our trip to Burkina Faso thus far has been a truly exhilarating experience thanks to Romaric’s planning as well as the planning done by his family. Each day we have been busy from 6am to 11pm with meetings, interviews, and travels between villages. Due to this intense schedule, we have had little time to send updates the past few days. Rest assured we will fill in the days with media and all of our interviews when we return to Minnesota.

DAILY UPDATE: 1-13-11

On our return to Tenkodogo from a visit to a Bagre Dam, we had the honor of having a conversation with an elder in his court, a small group of straw roof huts surrounded by a hand-shaped clay wall. His wives, children, and son’s wife, along with their children, live in this court together as a large family. Hear his perspective on what’s important as he “lives as one with the land” by viewing the video after the jump!

We have been in Africa for three full days and every day has been filled with moments, stories, and experiences that are beyond our wildest dreams for the Earthducation project. A “shout out” of heartfelt thanks to the Burkinabe, whose generous hospitality has already provided us with a tremendous sense of community and a glimpse of the gracious and powerful spirit which comprises the county of Burkina Faso.

Remember when you were told, “Be careful what you wish for, it may actually happen!” Well, that is exactly what has happened to us. The University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment has generously supported a longtime dream of ours, so we are packing our gear and kicking off the first expedition of our dream project, Earthducation — Expedition 1: Burkina Faso. After a successful pilot trip last winter (Expedition 0), the official launch of the Earthducation project is actually happening! Earthducation is one of the premiere projects offered by the new Learning Technologies Media Lab (LTML) at the University of Minnesota. We are so excited to share this project with you!
