North of Sixty° Launches!

We’ve just launched an exciting new project called North of Sixty°. Its mission is to create a global tapestry of climate stories that weaves together the history, culture, and traditional ecological knowledge of Arctic communities worldwide.

The North of Sixty° project is collaborating with classrooms from throughout the circumpolar Arctic, including schools in Russia, Norway, Canada, Finland, and the USA. These schools are being provided with technology kits and an online learning environment to scaffold students in the process of capturing, editing, and sharing video stories from their communities. Students will contribute not only to a tapestry of world knowledge about the Arctic and their individual communities, but also enhance our knowledge about climate change by sharing the human, or social sciences, impact beyond the scientific data and known impacts to the natural world.

In addition, in April 2013, LTML co-director Aaron Doering will lead six North of Sixty° explorers across Baffin Island through Auyuittuq National Park. The team will begin their journey in the community of Qikiqtarjuaq and travel over 100 miles across a stunning landscape of ice, rock, and sheer granite mountains to the community of Pangnirtung. All the while, they will be pulling their gear and food in pulks that, when loaded, weigh several hundred pounds each. The team will visit schools and interview teachers, students, elders, and others in both communities, while providing regular online updates about their journey and educating learners worldwide about Inuit culture and language as well as the changing landscape and climate in the Arctic.
